Small Pond
Favorite headline of the week: "Juan Urango Ready For His Title Shot." He's a junior welterweight from Colombia but that's neither here nor there. The only way I can put into words why this headline moves me so is to ask the reader to imagine that he's just seen a copy of Variety on a newsstand with a boldface header reading UNTITLED SCARLETT JOHANSEN VEHICLE UPDATE: MAN IN CROWD #3 HAS MEMORIZED HIS LINE. Now imagine that Man In Crowd #3 is professionally finished if he doesn't knock that line right out of the park. This analogy is inexact, but it walks us past the neighborhood, anyhow.

There's a great novel in this story, except that there isn't, because it's actually happening. Boxing magazines have covered it since its beginning, but usually they don't have a Baltic politics department to set the story up right. Neither do we. We just keep looking at the occasional side-story headlines and wondering what VK's motivation is: love of country? Thirst for power? Tired of the game? All three would move the plot along nicely, none quite feel right.
